Nowhere are the big guns covered in more detail.
Before Sgt. First Class Dean Michaels (Ret.) wrote the book on sniping,
he wrote a first-of-its-kind program of instruction for the Special Operations
Target Interdiction Course. A member of the 1st Special Forces Group,
he taught students everything they needed to know to succeed and survive.
Now he brings that information to you, covering every aspect of the sniper's
art: the history, equipment, skills and missions. He also includes reproducible
forms, a military-issue .50-caliber cartridge tip color guide and his
exclusive Program of Instruction for Special Operations Hard-Target Interdiction
Course. An invaluable resource for military and civilian shooters alike.

In 1967, death was the constant companion of the
Marines of Hotel Company, 2/5, as they patrolled the paddy dikes, mud,
and mountains of the Arizona Territory southwest of Da Nang. But John
Culbertson and most of the rest of Hotel Company were the same lean, fighting
Marines who had survived the carnage of Operation Tuscaloosa. Hotel's
grunts walked over the enemy, not around him.
In graphic terms, John Culbertson describes the
daily, dangerous life of a soldier fighting in a country where the enemy
was frequently indistinguishable from the allies, fought tenaciously,
and thought nothing of using civilians as a shield. Though he was one
of the top marksmen in 1st Marine Division Sniper School in Da Nang in
March 1967--a class of just eighteen, chosen from the division's twenty
thousand Marines--Culbertson knew that against the VC and the NVA, good
training and experience could carry you just so far. But his company's
mission was to find and engage the enemy, whatever the price. This riveting,
bloody first-person account offers a stark testimony to the stuff U.S.
Marines are made of.

Military insiders would do well to eyeball this stalwart survey of an
important yet understudied martial art. British historian Gilbert (Sniper:
The World of Combat Sniping, 1995) begins with the American Revolution,
works his way through major and minor wars, and concludes by pondering
the role of snipers in present-day Bosnia. He writes, for example, of
the Kentucky long rifle, which with its longer barrel and smaller bore
became the best hunting weapon of its time (with a marksmanship potential
highly prized by a nation of hardy, dead-eye hunters). British regulars,
on the other hand, burdened with their inaccurate ``Brown Bess'' muskets,
suffered heavily from canny, mobile American sharpshooters; Gilbert opines
that the gap separating war and hunting can at times be a small one. He
has interviewed many combat sniper veterans and ably researched memoirs
of past wars. To hear him tell it, the ideal candidate for snipership
is lonely but patient, meticulously observant, and highly self-disciplined--with
an impeccable knowledge of fieldcraft and nerves of steel--who can conceal
and camouflage himself, as well as stalk and shoot. Trained snipers, he
points out, also make excellent advance scouts, artillery spotters, and
intelligence gatherers; by virtue of their training, they can save the
lives of comrades and raise the morale of their unit while warding off
large-scale enemy attacks. Some soldiers may perform well in the heat
of battle, where the objective is to rout, face-to-face, an enemy who
otherwise would slay them. Yet the very same soldiers, as Gilbert notes,
might not kill an enemy quite so sanguinely at a distance--a subtle moral
nuance. An expert treatise on a martial specialty, though repetitive of
the author's previous work. -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates,
