I've been doing some reading about this round and it sounds pretty impressive for an older cartridge. All the authors had nothing but good things to say about it. It was the first cartridge to surpass the 4000fps mark and some claim it performs better than the 22-250.

Does anyone know if there's any new rifles chambered for it?

Hi Schmidt_Rubin,
You can still get this chamber in the Rem. 40X but I think it's the only rifle available. Please remember this has a very short barrel life! Your extreme accuracy will leave after 300 rounds, after that good accuracy will usually leave in about 600.

It is a fine shooting rifle and extremely accurate, there are tons of load info for this round.

Good luck sir, flea

flea is right schmitty. the 220 is a real barrel burner. i could get my 700 VS in .22-250 running 40gr nozlers just over 4000fps pretty easily. i think the 700VS was chamered for 220 swift as well. if you want fast go for one of the WSSM's. i'm liking the .25WSSM

It's a real barrel burner if you load it that way. I always go w/the 52gr match bullets and keep my velocities to around 3700 to 3800 fps. I dare say it'll be here awhile if you don't shoot the barrel too hot.

I've had a couple of .220's and everybody's right, very hard on barrels.
The last one I had had a stainless Douglas tube on it and had bad throat erosion after 600rds.

If you down load to increase barrel life, you might as well go with the 22-250, it'll fit in a short action and still be cheaper to load.

A friend of mine had a custom .22-243 a several years back, the big problem then was no-one was making a .224 barrel with a twist fast enough to stabilize heavier bullets. The rifle was a smoker with 55gr, chronoed over 4G, but would have really come into it's element if it could have used the heavy bullets, 70-75 gr.

I heard the 22-250 is a barrel burner as well, maybe not to the extent of the 220 but the problem is still there. I'm a big 222 Rem fan, I like that round and I've been looking for another hot little toy in a different 22 variation. I already have an AR-180 so 223 is out. I've been looking at the 22 Hornet, 220 Swift and might consider a 204 Ruger or 221 Fireball. The 220 is appealing to me though, I love speed wavey.gif

Schmidt,
Any case that is over bore is a barrel burner. But there's different degrees of this. A 22-250 with a 1 in 12 twist has a much shorter life that a 22-250 with a 1 in 8 twist barrel.

Got to see a .204 Ruger while I was with Flea at the Farm. after doing a little reaserch I think that is a cool little round.

how about the .22WSSM or the .22BR

Schmidt: A heavy barrelled Ruger 77 was my first .220 Swift, and I later had a Shilen DGA in .220 Swift. They were tack drivers with 55 gr. Noslers and IMR4064. If I recall 38.5 grs. with a 55 gr. bullet was Harvey Donaldson's favorite load. I used a few 50 gr. Speer Spitzers, too. Crows would simply explode when hit.

I abandoned the Swift in favor of the sedate .223 Remington. My Winnie Stealth is another tack driver with 55 gr. Sierras at 3250 fps. and 69 SMKs, too. My reasoning was, the lighter bullets weren't much good in the wind, so within 300 yards I could just as well shoot the .223 and have a long lasting barrel and burn less powder. Hot rods are fun, and I loved the Swift, but the .223 is just so much more efficient. It has become my favorite....neck in neck with the .308.
