Full Version: Best Base for a Yugo M-48?

I've been refinishing a M-48 as a project and decided I want to scope it. I don't care for the universal mauser mounts out there and want to get it drilled and tapped. By looking at it I think even with a turned down bolt welded on the bolt still won't clear the scope using a standard mount.

Is there a mount out there designed for mausers? The only one I found is made in Bosnia by a company called Zrak and it's designed for the Zrak tactical scope which is very expensive. I'm looking for something geared more toward hunting.

Schmidt-Rubin,

A properly forged or welded bolt will clear just about any scope. You will have to notch your reciever tho, but don't worry, it's perfectly safe and quite easy to do.

Email Davis May at for bolt forging service.

For scope mounts

http://www.kenfarrell.com/YUGO-48-1-20.html He also sells a 0 MOA and 30 MOA base.

These are for an FN mauser, but once you file off the charging hump the dimensions should work just fine on your Yugo.

There are a slew of standard bases that will work, but I don't like standard bases.

If you want a new barrel, try http://www.gunsnstuffonline.com/index.aspx...niqueid=4088092
but if you aren't familiar with setting headspace have a gunsmith install it. It's usually cheaper to have a gunsmith do it than buy the reamer and go/nogo gauges.

I'm building a hunting rifle in .338-06 Ackley Improved on a Parker Hale copy of a commercial Mauser action. This is going to be a pure hunting rifle. I am using Talley rings and bases. Very strong, look great and the rings have plenty of side surface to show up some nice engraving I have planned for the entire rifle.

I built one of these rifles for a friend of mine to look like the rifle on "enemy at thr gates" . The scope base i used was a leupold one piece made for am98 mauser. This is a great one to use because it is cut for the stripper guide on the back of the reciever ( no filing , grinding or cutting) it also give you a quick reference to were to drill.
I dont knoe if they still make it and you are stuck with the twist in and screw lock rings, but it will make life much easier.

The leupold one piece standard bases are still around, and I have a freind who prefers them, and he is B4 qualified.

The Yugo M48 is not dimensionally the same as a Gew98 or Kar98, which were the two sniper rifles Germany used in WWI and WWII. The Gew was LONG, and the Kar was "short" (a full length rifle by todays standards, but a karabiner then).

If you really want to replicate a German sniper rifle, a Czech 98/22 (dimensionally the same as a Gew98) and a Czech VZ-24 (dimensionally identical to a kar98) are the cheapest options. Both are still available to C&R holders for under a 100 bucks from various wholesalers.

Both the 98/22 and VZ-24 were used by the German army, and BRNO manufactured recievers often have Nazi acceptance marks.

I've been seriosly thinking about turning a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 into a replica Russian sniper rifle ala "Enemy at the Gates"...but I'll see if I can get a Finnish M39 as they have quite the reputation for accuracy.

I had a beautiful Finnish M39 for a couple years. Great shooting gun. It seemed to shoot best with surplus corrosive ammo. I ran some nice (and expensive!) Norma soft points through it and it didn't group near as well.
