Hello! Please help! I`we got two questions!

What scopes and silencers use this snipers!? And this silencer can stay on m16a1?
Thank you!
cowboy_bravo
The two hard charges in the top picture are carry'n M14 and what look like AN/PVS-2 optics but I may be wrong. The gents with the M16 in the bottom pic also have AN/PVS optics though they may be AN/PVS-1 it is hard to tell.

As far as the suppressors go I'm not sure what brand they are useing but they are only for the M14 to my knowledge.

Hey Brother,
The supressors look like the old Sionics pieces. They had a seperate valve to bleed off internal gas pressure. If you look at the suppressor near the muzzle, you'll see the valve mounted at a ninety degree angle to the bore.
I hope this helps.

As an aside on the Sionics suppressors; I am friends with the WerBell family. Mitch WerBell founded Sionics about 6 miles down the road from my house in Powder Springs, GA. Their old range is where I do all of my shooting.

Harry's right, that's looks like a couple of Sionics' cans. I'll see if I can confirm that (if Flea or JY doesn't first!)

Hey Guys,
Just as an update, I pulled out my copy of THE LONG RANGE WAR, Sniping in Vietnam by Peter Senich, Paladin Press, of 1994.
Beginning in Chapter 4, on page 95, and specifically on page 98, there is (in standard Senich form) a very thorough review of the Sionics, Inc. M14SS-1 7.62mm Noise and Flash Suppressor. It is the same model shown above.
As a secondary note, the night vision devices, starlight scopes are discussed thoroughly in the same book, beginning in Chapter 11, on page 221. As to the information provided as to identifying the units as both the AN/PVS-1 and AN/PVS-2 ; it appears that the soldier laying prone is using an AN/PVS-1(notice the smaller objective lense and no rubber eye cup), and the soldier on the bottom of the picture has an AN/PVS-2 mounted on his rifle.
I hope this helps.

Harry

Hey Brother,
Just a note...Scionics, Inc. made suppressors for several weapons during that era, including the M14, AR15 variants(basically the same item downsized), several experimental bolt action sniping weapons including the M40, and the Destroyer Carbine suppressors in 9mm.
They are also the designers and manufacturers of the MAC weapons systems, and had several versions for those weapons, as well.
I hope this helps.

Harry, Sorry, my comment was in reference to the suppressor for the M14 was not interchangable with the M16.

Thanks for the info though, very informative.

Harry has this one sorted out to a T wink.gif We had a few of the M-14 and M-16 Sionics in our unit. The castle nut on the flash suppressor/front sight assembly had to be removed and the whole assembly stored, the suppressor mounted on the regular threaded portion of the barrel, no special mount. Same for the M-16's just remove the flash suppressor and spin on the can. For it's era this was an outstanding system.

Harry also mentioned the Senich book, he's written 4 or 5 great volumes on sniping all are well worth the cost. Combine these with the death From Afar series and you have a pretty good reference libray on the subject. I recommend then highly.

Take care...Jim

If any are still around, they are probably in the hands of museums and private collectors who won't part with them except for a really pretty penny.

Then again, if you've ever crawled around a military storage depot you'll find all sorts of weird stuff. At Sierra Army Depot they opened an "igloo" and found a bunch of unissued Garands, only a few years ago. I was working with the contractor who blew them all to heck in a demolition pit.

Sad sad stuff. But the "Clinton era" is over now. I still think they should have sold those rifles for a heckuva profit to the NRA to distribute through the CMP.
