I'm looking for a review of this revolver with the 4" barrel. Are the moonclips a pain or are they more like speed loaders? I'm thinking about getting one.
Thanks

SR, I have a 5 inch 625 and love it. I tried a 4 inch but the 5inch had better balance IMHO. It's a great gun to shoot. Just make sure you get a demooner and remooner...saves your fingers and time. You can get them from Brownells or Dillon Precision. Also, I like the full moon versus the half moon clips.

Hi SR;

+1 for the 625 and the loading/unloading tools. Hey, it's .45acp biggrin.gif

Full moons are fast and good for range and games, if you carry the half moons work good in a fancy leather pouch...couple with a nice Threepersons holster and River belt from El Paso wink.gif The westerner is coming out ohmy.gif Eagle grips has some real stag grips in...yeehaw! get one you'll like, my friend. Been know to carry a 4" Mod. 29 too rolleyes.gif

Take care...Jim

I thought about the 5" model but it will be for CCW so I want to cut down on the size.

JY, there's a 2" 629 available, limited production model.

SR:

I have a 625. I like the steel full moon clips, because they hold the cartridges tightly. But you will need a loader and demooner. I like the demooner that looks like a pair of pliers. I like the moon clip loader from brownells, the one that holds six rounds at a time. My first time out at the range I had only steel moon clips, and no loader or demooner. I ended up with very sore fingers.

For range use, Brownell's carries plastic full moon clips that can easily be loaded and unloaded by hand. For any filed or real world use, steel moon clips arethe way to go, a round will never accidentally fall out, and they are faster than speed loaders.

Thanks for the info guys, I really want one of these. I like the idea of 45acp in a revolver.

Another nice thing about the .45ACP revolver (for reloaders) is that it doesn't throw brass all over the place. I've had mine a little over a year, and have the Jerry Mikulick (Sp?) grips. Nice for me, because our initials are the same, and everyone thinks I have custom grips. I just wish wish I could shoot like him.

I wonder if revolvers shooting 45acp have a little more velocity than a semi.

hi SR:

Had a 2" 629, was called the "Trail Boss" had a magnaport smile.gif Only problem with it was Garret loading that I carry it would kind of...welll...blinded the heck outta ya when you unleashed them ohmy.gif It was a sight to behold, recoil wasn't bad, but that dang blue spot in your vision lasted longer than the Pink Bunny rolleyes.gif

Everybody owes themselves a 625;) makes a good BBQ revolver with the right grips and leather biggrin.gif Plus if ya don't like the moons, the rimmed are back too smile.gif Don't know if they make speed loaders for that one yet...been out town to long sad.gif

take care, my friend...Jim

I finally picked up a 625, a 5" 625-6. It's at Clark Customs being worked over by the same guy that does Jerry Miculek's 625's.

I made some custom grips for it. As soon as I get it back, I'll post some pics and get to competin' with it.

Do you have contact info for Clark's Customs? What are they doing to your revolver?

The hammer has already been bobbed and the hammer body skeletonized, but I got the gun used and it has a few problems with end shake and timing. Basically, they're doing a "Target Action Job" and stippling the backstrap. Also, I already chamfered the chambers and polished the grooves off the face of the trigger, so I don't need to have those done.

It also has a large cylinder release, but I'm not sure who made it. I usually use the Ed Brown and this one is different. I like it though, so it'll stay.

I was going to do the stippling myself, I've been stippling for a while now. But, stippling is a PITA and as long as they are going to have the gun anyways, then I'm having them do it.

The 625-6 is the model to get. That's where the firing pin switched from the hammer to the frame, That means that the hammer has less mass, which translates to a lighter pull and quicker lock time. also, the 625-6 is before they started putting that abomination of a side keylock on the gun.

The reason I got a 45ACP revolver (a 625) is that I got fed up chasing brass, and at most matches, they are lost brass matches BUT with moonclips you can pick up your brass because of the moonclip.

Speedloading is no different than using a 686 with speedloaders, maybe a wee bit faster. Just watch the master -- Jerry Miculek. Poetry in motion.

LOL...CMShoot...Miculek OWNS Clark Customs! His wife's maiden name is Clark. Her dad was Jim Clark who founded the company. So, unless I'm missing something, the odds are that Jerry is working on your gun.

OK, back to topic. The 625 is very nice, but it is NOT a CCW gun by any means. A carry gun? Absolutely. CCW? No. It is an N-Frame revolver which is huge, so really, you're gonna want an outside the waistband holster. I LOVE my 625, and shot the IDPA National Match with it a few years ago. Jerry himself even watched me shoot a few stages since I was the only revolver shooter in my group, and he was "scouting" the stages. That being said, I'm sure he saw TONS of things I did wrong. LOL. He's is THE MAN.

I am really looking for a 3" 625, but they are soooooo expensive. That would be a sweet duty gun for a beat cop, though!

I didn't get mine for carry use, I got it to shoot IPSC Revolver class, as well as some IDPA and Steel Challenge stuff.

I can't remember the name of the fellow at Clark Custom that will be working on the gun, but it ain't Jerry. Jim Clark is a friend-of-a-friend, so I was able to get it right in for work without having to wait 6 months.

I used to shoot quite a bit of revolver comp using my old 4" S&W Model 28. I tuned it up and it still has one of the sweetest actions I have ever felt.
