That's quite a story. Maybe he shouldn't have talked to the police after the shooting. At least not without an attorney. Too bad the jury seemed convinced by the 10mm cartridge and hollowpoints.

What are we supposed to carry, nice bullets? We are talking about guns right? Juries can be such idiots.

the judge should have allowed the violant history of the deceased to be taken into account baseing a case on "behavior" when there was overwelming evidance to say the behavior of the deceased was unstable at best is just lunacy...
congrat's to the Prosecutor... You've successflully locked up a innocent man
as for the "hollow point" issue when walking in wilderness with the possibliity of attack from dangerous predators the maximum killing capability of the gun you have is essential for humane killing of attacking animals not to mention would you rather just wound a predator in the hope it leaves you alone
or drop it at the last possible moment?
i belive in case's like this the members of the jury should be put in the position of the shooter 1 by 1 on the track with a paint gun and a angery man charging at them then decide if the actions of the accused were reasonable or not.

I tell my students if you're worried about stuff like this, carry whatever your local LE agency carries. If anything comes up about your choice of ammo, simply state what you're carrying and that you carry it because that's what the local cops carry, so you figured it would be accurate and reliable. The LE agency has already done all the testing for you and can be your "scapegoats".
If this man had been attacked by a big cat, and wounded it with ball ammo, and the cat had killed this man, the same dumba$$ people of the jury would have said "if he'd been carrying HP rounds he'd been alive today".
These people conveniently choose when it's appropriate to use a certain bullet type. When another person sets out to kill you, wounding him isn't going to change his mind. Whether he comes after you or someone else, he will do it again.
I've been shooting rifles and pistols for over 50 years. Over these years I've heard arguements between all kinds of shooting disciplines, even hunters.
I've even heard negitive comments from LEO, duty snipers and ex snipers about the civilians practicing the sniper craft.
PEOPLE, shooting is shooting. If we don't stand together now, we will forever lose our rights to own and shoot our weapons.
I've always said "it's better to be judged by 12 then to be carried by 6". However now with the brain washing of America, and these tree hugging boneheads so prevalent a fair trial maybe a thing of the past.
Why would an ex sniper be against civilians learning sniper craft? If they're an ex sniper that would mean they're now a civilian? Sounds like hypocricy at it's best. Civilians have no real need for it but there's no laws against it either.

Shep, that is some excellent advice on carrying what the local police agency does. Very good indeed
