It's the Mk14 Mod-0, modified M-14 with an 18" barrel. Also to be used by Marine Corps SOD and Force Recon. This photo is the civilian version sold by Fulton Armory. Actually I think they sell the upgrade kit only.

Other than the receiver it does not look like an M-14. Did they give it select fire, or is that still a no no on an M1A?

The one pictured looks to be semi-automatic M1A. The M-14's have a selector knob where the dark area is above the trigger group. To make a M14 full auto, you remove the smooth knob, and install a "butterfly" selector. You can then use the weapon in full Auto.
M1A's do not have that feature, and are not even milled out for that.

The military version is selective fire.

SR,
Not all of them. You have to install the selector switch on the "Squad Automatic Rifle" version. We had a 1:4 ratio in the armory as a rule. Depending on the command/mission of course.

Didn't the M14 have a lot of problems as an auto rifle?

Not that I ever ran into. If used as designed, squad automatic weapon (ala BAR), and not as a M60 substitute, it worked very well.
Now, if you decided to use it as an M60, your butt is sucking canal water.

Why did they take out the select fire cabability our of the rifle?

The M14 is very hard to control in full auto, unless you are prone with a bipod and an E2 stock.
The FN-FAL had the same problem firing on full auto, all over the place is an understatement.

I have always wondered why we stopped using the full auto m14, while many others were using 7.62 NATO FNs and G3s. I suppose it was the "all over the place" factor that moved us to the 5.56 M16.

The M14 and FAL are just too light to use on full auto and hit what you're aiming at unless you're prone and using a bipod like cmshoot mentioned. The Israeli FAL with the heavy barrel and heavy wood stocks are great for it, I got to shoot one at the MG shoot, along with a MG-42 and a Uzi.

How does the delayed blowback help control recoil on the G3?
