It's an older Unertl 12x
I added a couple more pics, it has a dovetail mount of sorts.
SR,
It looks like a Unertl 2" target (thats the name of it) It has the standard front spring mount (not a mag type). These are great scopes at about $450.
Hope this helps, Vern
Thanks for the info, what purpose does the spring serve and how are they mounted to a weaver rail? The exterior adjustments are different for sure.
The spring keeps the scope in place, I only remember because an old sniper system used a similar model without the spring and the scope had to be reset after every shot, can't remember where I read it tho.

I see these scopes all the time. I shoot in a 3-Position smallbore league. Most of the guys are old-times and they use these scopes exclusively on older Anshutz Match 54's and Wincester 52's. I use match diopter sights, I'm kind of a traditionalist. From what little I understand, keeping the adjustments external eliminates paralax. Not realy sure. I'm leaving in about 15 minutes for a match, so I'll ask some questions.
The spring is a recoil spring. The scope is mounted to the barrel of the rifle. The external adjustmentys allow the scope to be moved forward and backward without loosing zero. For 3P your eye releif may be different from standing to kneeling to prone.
We were taught in Nam to set the spring with about 1" of free play. The reason they gave, was so that through recoil, it would clean any debris that my have gotten on the rail slide.
You had to reset it after firing your weapon. Now a days, we just push the scope back until it has pressure on the spring and lock it down. Great scopes.

ps, the reason for the spring, is the scope has external adjustments, so it can't be in a fixed position in the front. It has to be able to move. The spring allows it to move but return to the same spot each time.

That looks like a sweet setup.
I love owning and shooting classic arms like that.
Check Ebay. They are listed all the time A 15X Ultra-varmint can go as high as $650.
Bought myself 2 Unertl's last year, a 10x and a 12x both in the low $600 range shipped. I love them for target shooting. The 12x sits on a Winchester Per 64 300win Target, and the 10x will set on a 1903 Springfield. I would like to get a USMC marked 8x.

The external adjustments allow for a greater range of adjustment, while eliminating any vinyetting and less affect of parralax. This becomes critical as the magnification increases. It is why we use a similar system on the SN-9 scopes. You can have a 36X scope, with up to 200MOA of adjustment. If you were to even be able to do that with internal adjustments they would be almost unusable. That system also allows for incredibly precise and fine adjustment, which can be critical at extremely long ranges.
It is a fantastics system and has been working for many many years.

How tough were they compred to 2days scopes? Inresting stuff. Thanks everyone.
The scopes that are made NOW are over all a better made unit. With that said I feel the image that you get out of the external adjustable scopes is unbelievable and I believe the image is better then what you get out of a NEW internal adjustable scope. The Unertl’s I have outperforms most scopes I have looked through. I use the 12x Unertl to do a day clarity comparison against other scopes and I have not see one yet that sees better that my old Unertl.
These types scopes like the old Unertl I would not recommend for tactical use though. In low light uses they will not do the job, they are not waterproof, and the mounts are very vulnerable.

I like the vintage look and styling. I wonder if they could handle an 8mm?
I think Mike pretty well nailed it. If you mean tough in terms of their ability to handle recoil, they are as good as any scope, probably better than most. If you mean tough in terms of dragging them through the woods, trees, mud, and taking a risk of dropping them, well the modern internal tacitcal scopes are going to hold up better.
In terms of recoil, although they are different animals, the SN9 was designed for the 408 and 50BMG so the outside adjustments in general have no recoil issues. I have a freind of mine that uses his on a 338LM all the time. I would think the new Unertl scopes would hold up to an 8mm with no issues at all.
The USO SN9 is a monster and will take a beating and give one back!

I shot Unertls up to 1995. I've had them on large mag rifles and they held up as good or better than anything I've used sence.
The 2" target and Programer models are by far the best IMHO. Also try to find one with the posi lock mounts rather than the standard mounts.
You can also use different mounting blocks to give yourself more adjustment.
NOTE: If you get a Programer make sure you get the directions with it. It has three locking rings for the obj. They can be very difficult to adjust if you don't know what your doing.
The 2" Programer is their top of the line scope. It has three locking rings on the Obj. and a very fine paralax adjustment. The glass is very good.

The Programmer Model allows one to cover Parallex adjustments within one complete turn of the 3rd ring,
provided that the other rings have been set properly.
The Posa Mount system is very good but requires a milling cut in the the old style bases to work.
Although superior it didn't go over well.
Before rugged internal adjustable scopes were available they were the only way to go.
DON'T use the Recoil Spring on a High Power Rifle .
The scope will return into battery too quickly and strike you in the shooting glasses or forehead.
It's best used for rimfire work. Please don't ask how I know this.
I've been using a 2" 20x target and 2" 15x varmint model since 1965 without any problems,
on a Rem 40x 7.62mm and a Win Model 70 target .30-06.

This is my fist post on this site.....
When I was in the Marines I was issued a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 it had the Unertl mounted on it. I would give almost anything to have that rifle today. I lived with it for many months and it never failed me.
