Hello
Need help on solving a dispute with a friend on barrel life of a 308 win. He says 3500rds going by the tests he had read in precision shooting. I didn't know for sure but I figured 5000-5500rds. Would like to know how many rounds you guys have put trough your rifles I know you all keep track.
I have just started keeping an acurate count on the # of round in my newer guns and the older ones are just estimate from my handload log. Thanks guys and I can't wait to see some #

Well this depends greatly on how well you take care of your rifle and how hot the rounds are. If the rounds aren't too hot and you have good solid cleaning methods you should get 5000+ rounds through one. Celt will tell you he can get 8000-10,000 in a Walter Barrel (Which I am going to try in another 1000 rounds or so).
This also depends on the amount of accuracy you are going for. A benchrest shooter may only shoot 1500 rounds out of one before the groups "open up." My rifle recently started opening up. As newly barreled I was getting 5 round groups in the .2s while recent groups are showing .5-.6 . The rifle now has 2,500 (without looking at the exact number) rounds through it. Is this still acceptable accuracy from my rifle? Definitely! Or targets are never small than 1moa so .5 (1/2)moa is still plenty good.
Also, each barrel will be slightly different and each barrel maker will vary too. As far as the bet goes, my number that we generally tell people is 5000 rounds by book definition.
snip1er,
Let me know when you are going to try one. I will get you a Benchrest grade barrel.
Let me know if you need it installed as well.

Shooting a brand new Hart barrel that has just finished brake in and it is printing groups in the .3's that is just a little better than the loaner I was shooting that had just under 2000 rounds through it and that gun is printing the same groups as its sister gun that has around 4000+ in it. So I would think that more than 3500 is gonna get it. I agree with Snip1er more around 5500 to 6000 depending on barrel maker. Hey Celt they make those barrels in a 6.5 blank? I was thinking a 6.5x284 may be in my future....he he. Talk to you soon. Sethro Out.
