  • ROK "SCHOOL KID" CAMOUFLAGE SCHOOL UNIFORM, A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Once again while going through the boxes and storage for camou for our upcoming article on camou in use today in the ROK we found a strange one you folks in the States porbably never knew existed. this is a SCHOOL UNIFORM worn by youngsters in middle and high school LOL< your kids complain about phys ed I'll bet, how about military training? In Korea all serve, and it starts young, this jacket comes from a 12 year old that now is a father himself making someone we know and love a grandmother lol!

The uniform worn is very similar in construction to the old OG 107 Fatigues with a two pocket shirt with single button flaps and trousers with two slash front and two buttoned hip pockets only. Material is a heavy twill, and is white in colour with a black "camou" pattern.

Like regular military uniforms then a name tag is worn over the right pocket, the school patch is worn on the left upper arm, and rank patches on the collar. In this case the rank is a cadet Captain, a company commander. Rank and shoulder patch are made of leather, much like older ROK Army insignia.

The camouflage pattern normally is just odd shapes but in this case it includes both an airborne soldier with chute deployed and the insignia of ROK Special Forces (the crossed oar like items). this school unit was SF bound trainees and later in school would get basic airborne training and some SF skills included in class.

The ROK has been at war since it was formed and children learn early what is expected of them and receive military training to speed up training when they are inducted. Currently most wear woodland instead of the school specific uniforms. Those in university wear the normal ROK uniforms and are part of the reserve forces like my granddaughter now. Over the summer she will be going to SWC school and earn her black beret like her hero Soo-jin and we are both proud of her.

We hope you found this blast from the past interesting! Maybe some history you did not even know existed!

    Take care...Jim & Soo-jin
