What is it that I should look for in a shooting mat? Up until now I have only shot from a bench or on an army pt mat but that's marginal. I recently moved to an area without a good range to shoot unless I'm willing to drive a bit more than I'm used to and may end up shooting on farm land with a coworker.

With the varying terrain and such I am wanting to get a more serious shooing mat. What features should I look for? Anything to stay away from? Will be shooting a custom r700 and a m1a from a Harris bipod if that matters...

For the money the ones Midway USA makes aren't bad. I really like the Galatti that cmshoot has, but it was almost 4 times as much as mine.

Contact Flea. He had one made for me. It's of a tough multicam material. It wasn't fancy. The size was such that when folded and rolled up was the size of a military poncho. It has 6 securing loops and two attached, attaching straps that allows mat to be secured to a pack, belt etc. I can lay out in dry straw fields with no fear of puncturing it, on rocky ground, wet marshy ground. You can attach para cord to the loops and then secure the cords to trees and make a gear hammock out of it. After I got this, I sold all my fancy dancy mats. They were to big and bulky. If I knew how to do picture doing stuff, I'd show you guys, but alas, I'm a computer machine dum ba$$. Besides Ifen I goesifien a showen off all me good stuff, yous might launchifie a raid on me place and takesify me stuff!!

        I've got a Galati combo rifle case/drag bag/mat.
I hate the thing. Too many seams, buckles, and lumps to be comfortable.
I'm looking for something new as well.

I have a TAB...not much to it but it is waterproof denier...it rolls up to about the size of a large rear bag...packs good. The ones Midway has are OK but the black part gets hot. Eagle makes one that is not bad too.

Things I think I would like to see in my next one...something to hook the bipod feet in...a little padding...waterproof

I've looked at a few with either straps or a ridge at the forward edge for "hooking" the bipod but I don't think those are legal for competition.
I want one with a non-skid surface at the front edge.
Champion offers a couple that look pretty good.

                I wouldn't have that issue

I like the Deluxe in your link and the grey would get nearly as hot as the black
