Dedicated 100 yard rifle
1000 Yard Rifle

These pictures demonstrate a little of
the difference between a precision rifle, or a Benchrest rifle, and a
tactical rifle.
These
pictures were taken on July, 13, 2003 so we could test some 1000 yard
loads for the 1000 yard nationals in New Mexico. This was the
result;
- Neisika Action with Swarovski
8 X 32
- 1000 yrds on steel
- Wind was from 2:00
at 6 MPH.
- 8 rounds inside
3 1/8 inch.

From
the 6.5x284 barrel with 139 grain Lapua Scenar bullets - BC
of .615, Norma cases, and 46 grains of IMR 4350 at about 3000
fps. He had to wait after each shot for the LaRue steel
to right itself with the battery operated lift. A bummer
when trying to beat the wind. I put a cigarette pack on the
head to show relative size. The group of 7 rounds is 5"
tall by 3 1/8" wide. He first took 3 sighter shots, but
the wind got him a bit. The orange dot is about 3" in diameter.
The leade on this barrel puts a mark on the straight shank of the
bullet. A Highpower thing. The Black Hills factory moly
loaded ammo (142 Sierras) is doing about the same at 1000 yards. Makes
me wonder why I reload. Black Hills .338 Lapua factory
ammo shot two, 3" groups at 1200 yards for me off the back of Jacob's
pickup truck recently (last photo). |

From
the .308 Baer barrel with 190 grain Sierra Match bullets - BC of
.533, Remington 8mm cases necked to 30 caliber, and 82 grains of
Norma MRP ( same amount of RL-22 doing the same, as is a couple
of Vihta Vouri powders) at about 3400 fps. The target is an iron maiden, which
allows faster shooting since it does not go down. There are
nine rounds there (pen is covering one of them). The length
of the pen from center of bullet mark to center of bullet mark
is 3". Again, the orange dot is about 3" in
diameter. Five rounds can be fired in about 20 seconds with
this single shot rifle. |

The
John Geiges built rifle (with which the groups were shot) with
Krieger barrels, Geiges' muzzle brake, McMillan stock, Swarovski
PV 6-24x50mm scope, Jewell trigger at 2 ounces, Nesika
M action with right bolt, left port. It weighs 16 1/2 pounds
which is the light class max weight for the 1000 yard competition.
The Swarovski scope has a fine crosshair and target turrets.
Nice piece. I had a Nightforce NXS 5.5x22 scope on the rifle,
but decided to use the Swarovski this time around just for the hell
of it (if they let me). The Kriegers on my 100/200 yard benchrest
rifle that is going to the Nationals in Phoenix in October is working
well also. Great barrels. |

While
the .308 looks the better of these two groups, I am itching
to shoot the 6.5x284. Has shot 2.5 inch group. It is a bit
faster to load, which is important, particularly in the 10
round stage. Will try the .308 next year since the 6.5x284
barrel is being eaten up fast. The first 3 inches of the barrel are
already alligator hide after just 200 rounds which is normal for
the 6.5x284. The .308 with that many rounds still looks great.

Great bullets, powder,
cases, primers, barrels, stocks, actions, scopes, triggers, gunsmithing,
and Redding Loading Dies. Shooters should appreciate such quality. I
sure do, and I thank you.
PS. Oh to shoot
like Bob Crone. His first 10 round group in last year's competition
with the same (but modified with mini port) model Nesika action went
just 4.8 inches at 1000 yards! And now we have a world's record
under 2". Although these groups are not record breakers,
they sure are competitive. 6 like these would win the nationals.
PPS. The last photo
(Photo 20) is of the 2, 3 round groups from Jacob's .338 Lapua
and Black Hills factory loaded ammo with 250 grain bullets at 1,200
yards from the top of his pickup. Thought you might get a kick
out it. I sure did. The plate is 22 inches in diameter. Too
bad I don't know where the center is.
